The Founder

Red Wine

“The Count of Buena Vista,” Agoston Haraszthy was a vivacious pioneer whose love affair with grape-growing started in his homeland of Hungary. Born into the landed nobility in that country, Haraszthy grew up amidst famed vineyards and orchards that had been in his family for centuries. Surrounded by tales of intrigue and political exile, The Count emigrated from Europe in 1840 in pursuit of opportunity and freedom in the burgeoning American West. Following the 49ersin search of gold in the hills of Northern California, Haraszthy sought “purple gold” –the perfect ‘terroir’ for exceptional wine. He ultimately settled in Sonoma, birthplace of California and capital of the short-lived California Republic, where he founded Buena Vista Winery in 1857.

Tasting Notes

A deep ruby red color, the 2018 The Founder has an enticing nose of black cherry, blackcurrant, bay leaf and bitter chocolate with a touch of vanilla.

Raspberry and blackberry flavors are layered with notes of cedar and a nuance of minerality. This is a full-bodied wine with structured tannins and a plush mouthfeel. There is a nice freshness on the finish which is long and bold.

Vintage Notes:

The Founder is an expressive blend, bringing together Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from distinguished vineyards across Sonoma Valley including the renowned Moon Mountain. The wine was fermented in closed-top fermenters with extended maceration and was aged in 40% new French oak for 19 months before being bottled unfiltered.
